Long before the first driveway was poured, they say a founder of Walnut Creek struck thirty coins from a single golden walnut he found on the creek bank — one coin for every kind of neighbor the woods already had. For years the coins sat safe. Then, this summer, the mint was scattered. Thirty coins. Thirty hiding places. Every one of them somewhere in Walnut Creek — in plain sight of anyone patient enough to look. Each coin carries a fragment: a number and a letter. Alone, a fragment means nothing.
